There have been several big changes in the solar power industry over the past week. Let Renogy keep you updated with our Top 3 news stories this week!

1.This week Elon Musk rocked the solar energy world with the announcement of aiming to release his Tesla solar powered roof next month. Earlier this year Musk teased us with his idea for a solar powered roof that actually integrated the solar cells into roofing construction versus just mounting them atop.

The recent merger of SolarCity with Tesla has created skepticism among investors, however Musk has not let this stop him and is continuing forward with his plans. His goal is to create a solar-roof-with-battery that can be utilized worldwide. In his words, “One ordering experience, one installation, one service contact, one phone app.”

2.The small school district of Sheridan Community Schools in Indiana has just gone completely solar! They have installed a 1.8 megawatt system with 5,901 solar panels. This system is expected to produce about 2.2 million kilowatt hours of power. This environmentally friendly move is anticipated to save the district millions over twenty years. Most importantly the money saved can be put back into the school to create better learning environments for the kids.

On top of saving the schools money, the panels will provide a learning opportunity for students. Special computer monitors were installed so that the progress of the solar panels can be monitored each day. The district superintendent has stated that the children are fascinated by the system and are very involved in learning about it.

3.Some exciting news came to the Sciencenter in upstate New York this week in the form of a 15 kilowatt solar system. An award-winning solar energy nonprofit company, Everybody Solar, donated the solar array with help from All Points North Foundation (APNF), Cornell University and over 50 other individual donors.

With the help of a crowdsourced fundraising campaign, and a $25,750 grant from APNF, Everybody Solar is able to add a key feature to the Sciencenter’s new Sustainability Gallery. This system will power the entire Sustainability Gallery and be part of the actual exhibit to help visitors learn about sustainable energy.
