Its almost Labor Day, the holiday we’ve come to know as the unofficial end of summer. Labor Day, and fall, are just around the corner. The kids are back in school and something about fall just makes us feel ambitious. Is it something in the air? Perhaps the end of stiflingly hot summer days? Whatever it is, its making us ready for a road trip. September and October are perfect for viewing colorful foliage. Where are the best spots, you ask? Below we’ve laid out a few of our favorite fall road trip/camping destinations. Don’t forget a warm coat and blanket!

Cape Cod Area, Massachusetts

New England boasts spectacular fall colors, a real sight to see if you’re not from the area. Cape Cod is the beautiful seaside region of Massachusetts, the little peninsula that stretches into the Atlantic. While Cape Cod is often thought of as a summertime getaway, it’s also a pleasant escape in the fall months. Although it may be too cool to swim, its still a great time to walk along the beaches, visit the quaint villages, or even take a lighthouse tour. Cape Cod also boasts various historical sites, as it was one of the first areas in the US settled by the English.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, also known as the “Second City,” is bustling big city that tends to cool down quite a bit in the fall. Unlike New England, the Midwest is a little less known for fall foliage and more for its nightlife. However, the trees turn wonderful shades of yellow, orange, and red in mid-late October. Take a boat tour on Lake Michigan, stroll the magnificent mile, or bike along the lakefront. Take a break from the big city and venture about 1.5 hours southwest to Utica, Illinois to view the rivers, streams, and waterfalls of Starved Rock State Park.

Northern Michigan

Another Great Lakes State, Michigan boasts beautiful lakefront scenery and an abundance of campgrounds and hiking trails. You’ll even find some lighthouses! Sleeping Bear Dunes and Porcupine Mountains State Park boast camping and great views, while Manistique Springs offers a 10,000 gallon clearwater spring. Take a leisurely boat ride, or visit Detroit, labeled the “Comeback City.” Michigan has cool fall weather, travel deals, and many sights to see.
