If you’re anything like me, you love 3-day weekends. When Friday rolls around, you feel a rush of exhilaration followed by an ultra relaxed afternoon, knowing that you’ll see your office on Tuesday- instead of Monday morning. Memorial Day falls on May 30th this year, or the last Monday of May. In the northern states, you may think of Memorial Day as the first official day of summer, as the public pools open and school is, or is nearly, out for the summer. No matter your classification or grandiose vacation plans for this long weekend, Memorial Day means so much more.

Memorial Day was originally named “Decoration Day,” a day to remember those soldiers that bravely fought and perished in the American Civil War. Later, the holiday was renamed Memorial Day, and became known as a day to remember all deceased veterans of all wars fought by American forces. In other words, this is a day to sit, reflect, and be thankful for those who have fought and died for America.

So while you’re out for the weekend, have fun, relax, but don’t forget about what this holiday truly stands for.
