Frequently Asked Questions
Is this solar suitcase waterproof?
The Renogy 400W Lightweight Portable Solar Suitcase is designed with IP67-rated protection, ensuring robust resistance to dust and temporary water immersion (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes). This makes it highly durable in harsh weather conditions, including rain, snow, and humidity, while its ETFE coating and fiberglass reinforcement enhance weather resistance and structural integrity.
What type of battery can I charge with this 400w portable solar panel?
The Renogy 400W Solar Panel is compatible with various battery types, including 12V lithium-ion battery, sealed lead-acid (SLA), flooded lead-acid (FLA), and gel batteries. To ensure optimal performance and safe charging, it is recommended to pair the panel with an appropriate MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) charge controller, such as the Renogy Rover 40A or 60A MPPT charge controller. This will maximize energy conversion efficiency and provide proper voltage regulation for different battery types.
How much power can this 400W portable solar panel produce?
Under optimal sunlight conditions (peak sun hours), the Renogy 400W portable solar panel can generate up to 2000Wh (watt-hours) of energy per day. Actual solar panel energy output varies based on factors like sun intensity, panel angle, weather conditions, and seasonal changes. Expect around 1600-1800Wh daily output in real-world conditions.
What can you run off a 400-watt portable solar panel?
A 400W portable solar panel can power various devices simultaneously, including laptops (45-100W), LED lights (10-20W), smartphones (5-15W), mini-fridges (50-80W), and small appliances. It's perfect for camping, RV trips, and emergency backup power. When paired with appropriate batteries, it provides reliable power for essential electronics and moderate energy needs.
Will a 400W solar panel run a fridge?
Yes, a 400W solar panel can run a standard RV refrigerator or mini-fridge when properly connected to a battery system. However, for continuous operation, especially during cloudy days or nighttime, you'll need adequate battery storage. The panel provides enough power for most 12V refrigerators consuming 50-80W per hour.
How long does it take a 400W solar panel to charge a 12V battery?
Charging time for a 12V battery using the 400W solar suitcase depends on battery capacity and sunlight conditions. For a typical 100Ah battery at 50% discharge, expect 8-10 hours of charging in optimal sunlight. The integrated MPPT controller ensures efficient charging, reducing overall charging time compared to standard controllers.
How many batteries do I need for a 400 watt portable solar panel?
For optimal performance with a 400W portable solar panel, we recommend using one or two 12V batteries with 100-200Ah capacity each. This configuration provides sufficient storage for daily energy needs while maintaining efficient charging. Consider lithium batteries for better performance and longer lifespan.
Can I connect this foldable solar suitcase directly to my RV?
Yes, the 400W foldable solar panel can be connected to your RV's battery system with a suitable charge controller. For optimal performance and safe, efficient charging, we recommend using an MPPT charge controller. Be sure to follow the proper connection guidelines to maintain warranty coverage and ensure reliable operation.
What is the lifespan of this portable solar panel?
The Renogy 400W portable solar panel is built to last, with an expected lifespan of 10 years when properly maintained. The monocrystalline panels feature high-efficiency cells and durable construction, maintaining 80% or more of their original output after 10 years. Regular cleaning and proper storage will help maximize longevity.

Winter Power Worries? Not with This Kit!

Posted by Alto on Dec 23rd 2024

Power outages in winter are no joke, but this kit has been a total game-changer for my home setup. I initially thought about installing rigid panels in my yard, but winter sunlight just doesn't cut it, and the fixed angle and shading issues made it hard to get enough power on those short winter days. The 400W solar suitcase is a game-changer, it's lightweight, easy to move, and lets me adjust the angle to catch the best sunlight throughout the day. During a recent storm, it kept my heated blanket, lights, and Wi-Fi router running without a hitch. When I'm not using it, I just fold it up, put it back in the original bag, and tuck it into the storage room, it takes up zero space.

The Renogy 400W Lightweight Portable Solar Suitcase is a great product. It is very well built and produces a high wattage output even in the hot weather of Florida. It also works great with the BLUETTI AC300/B300/B300k solar generator.

    Portable, Reliable, Sturdy, Stylish

Posted by Cristian on Aug 16th 2024

I absolutely love these solar panels! I love the versatility since I can take them out when I go camping or keep them as an auxiliary power source on my sailboat, without the need to ever install them permanently. They are a little bigger than I anticipated but they are rated for 400W so the added size is expected, over let's say a 200W panel setup. Funny enough, these panels actually produce more power than some of my other permanently installed solar panels. The build quality is excellent, starting from the solar panels themselves to the carry bag. The color scheme is stylish and they look and feel premium. Using them does feel like using a top of the line product. The frame is sturdy and feels like it can easily withstand the outdoor elements. I also love the blue corner protectors that keep the panels a little bit off the ground and protect the edges. I've read and watched some reviews complaining that the kickstand is not adjustable, but it doesn't really bother me. I feel that having it adjustable doesn't add much and can lead to a potential weak point, breakage, or water sipping into the adjustment mechanism and leading to rust or other sorts of damage. The easier they are to use, the more reliable, and less prone to damage they are, the more points they score in my book. Since the build is mostly made of metal with very little plastic, they can be a little heavy. Personally, I consider the added weight a bonus since I don't have to worry that they will fly away with the wind, bend or break if something runs into them. If you're moving them short distances, such as from your car to your campsite, the weight is not an issue. The handles are also really well made and are constructed out of one piece of metal. They don't have any padding to make them softer which is good since you don't have to worry about the material rotting or going bad in the rain or snow. For longer distances, I move them using a collapsible cart/wagon which makes transportation a breeze. Connectivity is easy, just connect them to a charge controller and a battery and you are good to go. If you want to run your regular 110v appliances, just connect an inverter to the battery. Connect your coffee maker, toaster or any other electronics you like. It really is as ingenious and easy at it sounds. This solar panel is more than enough to power all of this. Just makes sure you have a good battery, good wattage on your inverter, and a good charge controller (recommend MPPT). Renogy makes all of these as well and I've owned several of them throughout the years without issues, but you can really use any brand you like, they are all inter-compatible (thank God). Price-wise, you get what you pay for. The cost spread out over years of use comes out to actually be low per year of use. At least, that's how I look at it and it makes sense to me when making this decision. If I buy a cheaper solar panel but it lasts me 6-12 months before the issues start appearing and I have to buy a new one every time, I'm actually financially better off by just buying this product. In terms of the enjoyment of use factor, every-time I use these solar panels it feels really good to use them. They are well made, reliable, and very pleasant to look at. Spread that enjoyment out over years of use and that makes me a happy camper (literally, pun intended).

Another Piece to the Boondocking Puzzle

Posted by Tony Houston on Aug 11th 2024

I just used this suitcase to charge an Ecoflow River Pro from 47% charge to 100% in 2 hours, 17 minutes. The panels were NOT aligned for maximum charge but laid flat on a trailer roof. They still achieved 220 watts. I'm VERY satisfied with their performance. They should achieve near 400 watts if properly aligned. They're light for their capacity but not "light." Definitely wear gloves when touching the metal panel frames / handles after they've been in the sun a while. They're great for rigidity and handling when cool, but they get HOT!

Stupid simple and quick to use!

Posted by LeadfootVagabond on Aug 9th 2024

First solar panels ever. Unboxed the 400w panel and had it set up in 30 secs. Once you open the kickstands, they stay open, ready to hold the panels. Connect the MC4 cables, connect to your battery bank (Delta2 Max here) and done! ~350w is great. Don't be fooled. These are solidly constructed and feel rugged, but that does equal "heavy". They're also a bit long but they're still very manageable. The size and heft is worth the increased potential output. Very impressed!

    400W Portable Solar Suitcase

Posted by Keith K. on May 10th 2024

I was skeptical on how much power these panels would deliver when compared to the name plate, and it exceeded my thoughts. In full sun mid day in Michigan (April no less) I was able to generate 365W's!!!!! The second surprise was how strong these are build with the aluminum frames and kick stand legs. These to date are the strongest and one of the highest performance portable panels that I own. You will not be disappointed with this product! -Keith@ThreeDayRV

    Easy to carry

Posted by Ron on Mar 12th 2024

As someone who's constantly on the move, I can't overstate how much I value its portability. At just a little over 13kg, the fact that it packs 400W is mind-blowing. It's incredibly easy to carry on camping trips. Believe me, every gram matters when you're out in the wilderness.
